Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse

7320 Lighthouse Road
Port Hope, MI 48468

The original Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse was constructed of stone taken from the shore of Lake Huron in 1848. The keeper's house and separate tower were located on a three-acre clearing hacked out of the dense wilderness. The light is still an active aid to navigation, making Pointe aux Barques one of the oldest continuously operating Lights on the Great Lakes. The Pointe aux Barques keeper's house and tower have been completely restored. The Museum is open to the public free of charge.

Lighthouse Museum hours are:  10:00 am - 7:00 pm
Daily from Memorial weekend to October 15th

Directions from Port Austin:

From the Shell Station in Port Austin, take M-25 South (which actually heads east at that point) 12 miles (1-mile past Huron City). Lighthouse Road will be on your left. Turn left toward the lakeshore and travel approximately 1/2 mile to the entrance to Lighthouse Park. Turn right at the Park sign, travel 300 yards and you will see the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse.  Travel time is approximately 15 minutes.

Hume Township City Hall

1920px-Hume_Township,_MI_location

Organized in 1859 in Huron County, the township name was to honor it’s first settler, who operated a trading post near the mouth of the Pinnebog River, Walter Hume.  Mr. Hume was often regarded as the “Daniel Boone” of the territory, as he lived and traded among the native Americans of the area.  Port Crescent, once a booming port village, lies to the northern edge of the township and Kinde, a proud agricultural community is in the southeast portion of the township.

Huron County Nature Center & Wilderness Arboretum

(989) 551-8400

Established on a tract of untouched land in Hume Township, Michigan, the Huron County Nature Center and Wilderness Arboretum  has been under the tender care of the Huron County Women's Clubs since 1941.  In 1990 the Huron County Board of Commissioners formed this center for the enjoyment and education of the public.

What is a Wilderness Arboretum?  It is a place where plants, animals, insects, fungi - all things living or dead - are protected for scientific and educational purposes and for the preservation of the natural environment.  The Nature Center's geography of alternating sand ridges and shallow swales is a haven not only for native Michigan species, and nature lovers. The Nature Center is open all year round, and admission is always free.

Take M-25 to Oak Beach and turn south on Oak Beach Road. Loosemore Road will be on your left, turn down Loosemore and the Nature Center will be on the left about 1/4 mile down.
